COUNCILS
URGED TO CUT DOWN ON "STREET CLUTTER"
Members of the public have
been asked to report unnecessary street signs as
the Government urged councils to cut down on
"street clutter". Communities Secretary
Eric Pickles and Transport Secretary Philip
Hammond have written to council leaders calling
on them to reduce the number of signs, railings,
bollards and advertising hoardings. The
Government believes that in some cases traffic
signs and railings are installed by councils in
the mistaken belief that they are legally
required.... more

MARKET
HALL TO GET £500,000 ROOF REPAIRS
A recent
report said £2m of work was needed to the Market
Hall's copper roof and stonework but the city
council said that with the current pressure on
budgets, only the most essential repairs were
being carried out. Most if the work will take
place at night allowing the hall to remain open
during the project, which is expected to take
about six months. Councillor Matthew Holmes said
they had budgeted for "significant"
repairs... more

HIPPODROME TO BE
REPAIRED
Derby City Council will
carry out £90,000-worth of repairs to the
derelict Hippodrome Theatre and plans to force
its owner to pay, even if it bankrupts him. The
authority had ordered the grade II-listed
building's owner, Christopher Anthony, to remove
loose bricks and timbers on the facade and put up
hoarding across the Crompton Street side to
improve security. But he failed to meet the
deadline so now the council is preparing to
appoint contractors to carry out the repairs on
its behalf. Around £60,000 will be spent on the
Macklin Street side of the building where most
work is needed.... more

TRENT WITHDRAWS
ROUTE FROM BUS STATION
Trent Barton is to withdraw
one of its services from the new bus station
because it believes the building's location is
causing delays. The company began a public
consultation in July about moving the Mickleover
service from the station to its former stop on
Albert Street. They said responses so far
indicate a huge majority of people are backing
the change. Alex Hornby, Trent Barton's
commercial director, said they would go with the
views of its customers. He criticised the
station's design for the traffic lights that
delay vehicles when entering and leaving the
site.... more

COUNCIL
HOUSE COULD BE 'REBUILT'
Derby City Council is set to unveil
a £33m plan to "rebuild" its aging
Council House. Under the proposals, the building
would have its insides stripped out, leaving only
the facade and an extra storey would be built
along with an atrium and a new council chamber.
The changes are designed to allow staff to work
more flexibly and efficiently, and will see the
building's capacity rise from 500 to 1900 people.
Councillor Mike Carr said the architects had
envisaged a virtual "rebuilding" of the
council's headquarters.... more

QUEUING
DISPUTE CLOGS BUS STATION
Passengers at the new bus
station are being given instructions on how to
queue correctly in a bid to tackle congestion
problems on the concourse. Managers found users
of the station were blocking walkways rather than
waiting in designated areas. Complaints about
overcrowding have led the city council to debate
whether passengers or the station are at fault.
Lanes are being marked on the floor and
information messages displayed at the station.
Station manager John Evans said people just don't
seem to want to queue in clumps.... more
